how do you get going(catch a wave) on one of them?

Keith Usher just paddle, white water takeoffs are best when starting. The foil hooks up to the “under” wave and pushes you forward. We have many safety features built in!

No paddle take off. Is it hard to paddle?
To answer your question, the hydro foil will be mostly a drag paddling for the wave, however once the foil starts to feel the energy it wants to lift. Your timing needs to be on point to make the final adjustments, weight transfer, and set the rig to be coefficient for flight. If you hang at the curl the energy will be more intense causing your rig to jump so quickly, you won't have enough time to react.

I added a handle and a slick top I call a "slide plate". This allows your body to do micro adjustments (forward & backwards) to control pitch and your angle of lift. Key points foiling

Take off?.....I avoid the steep drops. Mushy white water take-off are ideal. However I'm on a foil drive which make life so much easier. Duck drives are normal granted it deep enough. If not I'll flip the board, kick out, and duck drive if need be

Can you describe the feeling compared to surfing, the non-contact with the wave face and non-use of a rail makes it look like it would be a totally different feeling. Also whats the cost of a setup like that?

Yes! You have time to make a split decisions on adjustment, pitch, and control. Using a short mast allows you to feel its sensitivity, keeps you on your toes, and stay focused.

oh no, it’s a magical way to ride. There’s no noise like the board chattering over every ripple, and because the foil in underwater the ride is very smooth with no jumps and troughs. So in the end you get. Buttery smooth ride that’s faster than a surfboard and can last for several minutes. It creates a Better reason for surfing every wave.

There another aspect that revolutionary. That when your on a body board your pretty much stuck in the pocket of the wave and that's it. It's a one way trip. On the foil you have the ability to move around on the faces from one side to another. Hence lot of cut backs, tube time and even floaters off the top in each wave. There's so much more freedom to ride all over the wave. I just stay out of the white water. Foils don't fly smoothly in it. The flying part is transcendental on a spiritual level.

I saw the video in 2012? with Laird doing it in ski boots and I thought … I could design something like that for my local beach break. And I did, rode them and let some mates ride it too. Then posted it on Swaylocks and received very mild interest.
Then Kai came along and it all went wild, but for a few, it was old news.

Mahalo braddah, I saw all the videos and it just confirmed what I thought. Foils have their place and best purpose. However if you are young or a stand up surfer you can ride vertical extreme reef tubes but its not the best solution. Most of these guys are standing up. Some even using kites to get into the wave early to make the drop. Then when you drop being on a foil you have even less room in the tube. When you get smacked you can jump away from the craft easier to avoid more injury. Even body boarders can take off on tubes but it is at least not as likely to injure you and it is not as fast as a surfboard. If I was younger,I would love using foils on big waves that build up slowly that you can get down the slope easier before it fully cascades down. Even in my 70s I would love to use one to get reform waves that nobody is using like you do. However, I think a prone foil where you can get caught in a steep wave that would break on your back with this craft could cause serious injury to your spine or neck or worse getting impaled by parts of the craft. At my age, I am more interested in longevity in my surfing, so safety and health becomes a higher priority than doing something on a surf craft that may not be its best purpose.

YES..... foils have there place to shine and areas were they shouldn't be. Knowing it's potential and it's down falls only make you a better foiler/ person. Safety is key to every surf session.

normally knee to waist. Anything smaller is just plain fun. I'll go bigger if the conditions are perfact. Big slowpy waves are best. So fare the biggest wave attempted 15ft face, longest ride about a 1/2 mile, and the biggest smile ....PRICELESS

The twin lateral foil is excellent for lift in smaller or flatter faces but it’s possible to design foils for steep, hollow waves so you can foil in the tube. This from a GoPro under the nose of my foil board.



13 March 2024 look man all I'm doing is trying to share my stoke with everyone. Different ways of enjoying our main focus, which is life!.... what I'm doing can be done in area that are not crowded. However if it is crowded then I'll make the choice to join them with all good intentions. If it calls for a different discipline of equipment then I have that a ability of knowledge and experience. Needless I'm just here to share with the paipo & belly board community my knowledge of fun and if anyone wants to ask questions, by all means "the front door is always open".....apologize accepted

the whole foil rig. Being it's short the foil will tend to left, breach, drop, and repeat. Now if I try to keep it from breaching, then the hole rig becomes a drag. I think best make the mast a bit longer so the deck just barely hovers above the water. Round two

or ridden prone. In steep waves the out side of the foil is exposed so less lift.

I did a lot of variations with long foils rather than lateral foils, but I did try lateral foils and found they were too sensitive on a steep face.

Looks like you've been doing this for over 10yrs and that's awesome. Thanks for showing what you've been doing for years. Are you still doing it? Making boards and riding waves on a hydrofoil?.. Thinking I'm the only one doing this, but good to know I'm not the only trying.

the moment I saw Laird riding a foil with ski boots I thought Oh yeah I can make this work in the surf, like at a normal beach.
I posted on Swaylocks for years and it was only when Kai did it, then everyone said he was the first. I had neighbours say I saw some guy steal your foil idea but I told them it’s different.
Now still foiling on prone mainly because it’s such a buzz, but my foils are different and don’t need to be AOA specific.
It’s good to see you out there doing it too, there’s not enough of us.

I have ridden other wings without the tail, very difficult. The Triton is intuitive and really easy to ride on small waves. Would be good for learning on or people interested in smaller waves. Feels playful. Does not give the length of ride or speed of traditional foils but takes less muscle to control and not as scary or dangerous as a high aspect wing.

Having fins does help with getting in a wave. I tried without it and made it harder to get in. It's not impossible, just more beneficial. The foil drive also has a cruise feature that set on 30% power. So paddling with fins also increase the distance and saves on battery life.

Robert Moynier the foil I'm riding is an Axis 1000, 82cm mast, short fuselodge, and the 390 tail. This set up works best for me. Any foil will work, your biggest challenge will be finding a board. It needs to be custom made. Hope this helps
