I've read a few descriptions of modifying UDT fins and Bongo from Byron told me an angle grinder was used. Anyone know what sort of disc would be used or an alternative to an angle grinder?

When I got my UDT fins, all I did was flex the heck out of them with the blade on the ground and me applying pressure. I did it a lot on both sides of each fin, but I am sure no where near as long as if I modified them. They are incredible since doing that. I surf 3-4 hour sessions all of the time with them. I am only 150 pounds as well.

For an angle grinder look for a wheel like this Bob.
A random orbital sander with 40 grit would work as well.
I am 6'2" and weigh 190lbs and have no problem using my UDT's uncut. They are far and away my favorite fin.
The only mod I've made is neoprene strap pads.
Greenough is such a little guy I could certainly understand why he would cut 'em down "to taste".


There's some creative grinders out there for sure...

John Hughes, a waveriding friend in Cocoa Beach, FL, recently told me how he reshaped his UDTs using a grinder and showed me the end product which looked very good. After reading this thread I asked him to send me the details which follow.

"Hello Rod- I used a 4-1/2 in. Norton Rapid Strip wheel on a Dewalt metal grinder. Here is a link http://www.nortonconsumer.com/Discs-RapidStrip.aspx, about 10 bucks. Most hardware stores have them.

They make them for a number of tools but with the small grinder I was able to quickly take down a lot of rubber without clogging. I then used the same wheel to final shape the fin. Worked great and did the job quickly. I hope this helps."

I should clarify that the wheel I used was the non-woven fiber wheel. They are blue in color.

I too kick my UDT's uncut. When the conditions get into the overhead range there is nothing better than to have those thigh muscles fully engaged when powering through turbulence or pumping up to high speed for getting into a fast long period swell.
