For several years now a couple of Bonzer fanatics who also ride Bonzer paipo boards have been strongly encouraging me to give it a go. Plus my regular paipo-riding Costa Rica surfing companion has been salivating the past few years about how this Bonzer board could be such a bichen board at our Costa Rica breaks... so he has been strongly encouraging me to spring for one (and, of course, wants to be one of the first to ride it next month!). My few opportunities to test ride their boards in Southern and Central California have always coincided with less than ideal surf. Then my co-conspirator on the Paipo Research Project bought one during the past year -- the design of that board is modeled after the Laguna-style influenced-Bonzer shape being popularized by Dr. Robert Moynier. What can I say but, "Thank you for all your encouragement... the trials are about to begin."

It was extremely difficult balancing the straight edge ruler on the above photo... but you get the message!

Ultimately Configured During Costa Rica Sea Trials (June 2014)

My compromise fin configuration for fun surfing given the fins I had with me. The 6-inch True Ames Bonzer fin was eventually replaced by my 4.5-inch FCS PC-5 center fin; the small forward True Ames Bonzer runners replaced the rear large True Ames Bonzer runners; and, some small, low rake/small base fiberglass fins replace the small runners in the front fin slots. This configuration provided me with a combination of drive and pivot turning capability that was superior to the baseline fin configuration for my style of riding.

This configuration worked amazingly well despite the Knubsters being non-foiled fins. The single tab FCS Knubsters were placed in the forward plug. They were particularly effective in the point-like lava reef waves I was riding in Costa Rica. The Knubsters did not have any cant (cant is in the fin box).

This configuration consists of all-Bonzer small runners (a combination of clear fiberglass FCS canted small runners forward and black hexcore True Ames canted small runners in the aft slots). They worked very in the point-like lava reef waves I was riding in Costa Rica. The runners had built-in cant in addition to the fin box cant.
