Yes!! I’d met Mr. Lum in 1996 at his favorite spot. Diamondhead, setting up his hydrofoil paipo talking stories with his good surfing buddies as they all get their boards waxed up. When he passed away, his Ohana had set up his long love of many Hawai’i Original Hydrofoil Paipo’s boards, Hawai’i First Hydrofoil Paipo Rider indeed… mahalo Unko Gilbert for your love and creations of Paipo’s Boards…. 🏝🌊☀️🙏🏽💝🌺

Neal Miyake
Oh and Gilbert was the one who planted and cared for the garden above Cliffs.

That was the first demo guitar pick board that was made by David of Hilo that I used during the first Olympic Games Paipo board event that was held at Sandys. That board you have posted was my first winning of a Paipo Board Surfing Contest and I was faced against the true Hawaiian Paipo boarders of SANDYS Royal n Primo Richards, many stories n board creations were used during their time. This is where I filled in n keeping this REAL of riding SANDYs on a wood board…

Patricia Nole
so Awesome!!! I came in 2nd for Women’s Bodysurfing, at Makapuu

Neal Miyake
Brah, look at you! Didn't realize this was your board Jarrett. Know you were there that day and you donated the boards to ride. Think was the same day Mike Stewart brought the thin paipos.

Jarrett Liu
Hey wait. Neal Miyake is that you in the background with the safari postal-hat? You were there right? I remember you were wearing those safari postal hat

Neal Miyake
oh yeah! I entered the Aloha State Games many times. Had makule league bodyboarding division. That is so funny! I always wore that pith helmet.

Jarrett Liu
Mahalo Palala

Rob Beling
Loving the look of that board! It looks a little smaller than the HPD XL which I love to ride in most surf conditions. I think I would struggle to ride a heavy hollow shorebreak wave on my HPD. I do love that delta shape though.

Jarrett Liu
Yeah’ this shaper was from Hilo and made me one “demo” and he donated the one Neal’s photo of my “1st place Gold Metal” for the Paipo Board in 1992. That year eastern shore surf was rolling at 6’-8’ft at Makapu’u, Lifeguards who walked down with surfboards and I joined them with this spoon shape paipo. Everyone caught theirs wave as Kaeo (Sr lifeguard) “yelled” go go go, 16’-18’ft face clean face as I lean hard on the inside right-rails found myself in the center on the face as I can hear the crushing waves behind me as I looked ahead of me the “WALL” was straight vertical that I knew that barrel was so close behind me as I got closer to the cove rock as I pushed down hard as I can as this huge wall of water passes me…

Jarrett Liu
wood board has weight that is needed, HPD doesn’t have enough weight to get the proper speed and distances

Rob Beling
My experience too! I bought some 1/2” marine grade plywood and experimented with different shapes and sizes last winter. The art work has been heavily influenced by yourself and your riding style along with other inspiring Hawaiian designs I have seen. None of the boards have any rocker or nose lift on them. They are super fast but I have to move around on them more to prevent pearling. I like their simplicity. The board with the he’e and the Duke body surfing is my preferred for heavy shorebreak waves. I love the story of your epic ride! We don’t hear enough rides described like that! Thanks again for all the inspiration that has allowed me to experience surfing in such a wonderful way! Mahalo Malolo!

Jarrett Liu
Rob Beling yes upside down guitar pick board body has to move around. Imagine others guys who’s BIGGER and has bigger boards like “NATHAN HUNG”…

Rob Beling
1/2” plywood

Of particular interest to all things paipo, it was Neal Miyake that encouraged me to create a paipo website back around year 2000. So on a snowy, shuttered-in day, it happened. The MyPaipoBoard forums followed a few years later. The forums are still on the Internet but like many forums have fallen to the wayside as social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc., have taken over, for better or for the worse.

Unknown, Point Panic, 1984. That was a great summer with awesome south swells. Used to be ok to ride papa paepo'o (paipo) boards there, but after the state put a "No Surfboards or Bodyboards" sign up (Panics is a predominantly bodysurfing spot) it seemed paipos in the lineup (going right anyway) were frowned upon. I'm a bodyboarder and I get it, but I think paipos should be grandfathered in. Maybe John and Jarrett can give a better perspective.

Oh yeah’ that’s our “power-arm” MK Palala Mel… fearless rider n you betah’ not B in his way… hahaha 🤣 I’d learned quickly when he’s coming and doing his up n down cut-backs, he’s only going to say this ONCE… “I NO KEA”… one tough buggah’ in the surf lineups but a warm hearted 💗 PALALA who made Panic’s SOLID… miss you my KALIHI Palala MK….

John Galera
I remember them as the good old days. Kahanalu worked hard to get the State to restrict Panics to bodysurfers, I respect and appreciate when they give me a wave to ride. Now as senior citizen with a camera, I’m honored to memorialize the unbelievable talent that Panics has fostered!3

Massive 🌊 Unko🤜🏽🌊🤛🏽… reminds me of MAKAHA one year when Neal Miyake said Jarrett are you going out as I approach him I said yeah’p. Neal was like Makaha doesn’t look safe as 10’ft plus rolling from way beyond the flag-pole. Unko John Galera you hit that huge surf for a Paipo boarder well✊🏽. There’s not many of US big waves 🌊 riders left who will charge but we’ll do what we love n keep charging

That would be great to watch a video a Mike Stewart riding a paipo, and to get his feedback as pro bodyboarder

Keith Usher
my personal finding as a 25 year bodyboarder is that the bodyboard proportions make a paipo perform best. (length/width) Have them long and less wide may increase straight down-the-line speed, but hinders turning ability.

Elijah Baley
I agree. My latest paipo has the proportions of a small bodyboard, and I find it works quite good, I get the same feeling of great agility than when I used to bodyboard. I find myself making more turns.

Keith Usher
I have used my fav bodyboard as a template to build my paipos from, copying the rail curve have made them turn almost identically. There is a good reason bodyboards have been 40" to 43" for the last 50years.

2009 is the last of seeing Claud Higa, he’s stop coming out due to his back. I still see him walking near his neighborhood of Kahala Beach while I’m cycling through

surfie bellyboards

Tony Cosgayon
what are they made of?

Jarrett Liu
Paulownia Wood

Keith Usher
Paulownia (as has been identified) is impervious to salt water and light. it a very interesting wood. Balsa for example would be lighter but need to be sealed/glassed
