I use to watch this guy ride a red mat out at canoes and he would go
Adam Williams
i I have taken mats with both times I have visited Hawaii, only went out once at Waikiki and had a quick wave with the crowd , but was lucky enough to score really good waves on the Big Island at Honls and over on Molokai , so easy to deflate , roll up and throw in the bag with a pair of flippers

Harry Okahashi
I was a a Paipo Board rider. Once in a while I would take out a canvas like mat red and it was fun. I got some nice waves

is Blue Bell , its a hybrid cross paulownia / eva rubber paipo.
4' 8" Flat with no rocker I shaped the edge bottom with bevel edges to allow plenty of release & drift, full concave from nose to tail and the side cut allows more water to release and when on edge the tail will bite more. I have kept a sharp edge on the whole rail with the 10 mm eva bevel sanded to form the rail, nice stick and enjoyed riding this morning compared to the striped belly board .

the drift is an acquired taste

Adam Williams
when riding mats it’s all about drift and slide 🛝

Bob Green
That's true, though I never really got into mats. By coincidence, I sold mine just the other day.

Damian Coase
Thanks WAKA, taking the fins out and surfing au natural is on my to do list this summer. The drift and slide, and hopefully more speed, are what I'm after.

Bob Green
Bear in mind you may not automatically get a lot more speed, especially if you can't get hold. Either way, you'll soon find out, which is part of the fun.

Adam Williams
with mats, your flippers are your fins , so the less resistance on the bottom of what your riding leads to more speed , boogie boards ,timber paipo & mats have nothing under neath , add a fin or keel and it will give drive when you turn , have a look at Dan Thomson riding his mat at the Ranch .......https://www.instagram.com/tv/CjFBuCZvUPe/...

If you don’t mind me asking Adam what are the dimensions mate
I scored a nice little Paipo last summer looks a similar shape 🤔

Adam Williams
its 4'8" x 181/2" x 1 1/2" , basically a flat piece of paulownia with little rocker shaped into the bottom and the pad glued onto te deck for extra floatation , I have knelt on it a couple of times but it a prone rider.

MedSwells Surf
wow, love how it goes!. It is just a paulownia core without added foam for extra flotation?

Adam Williams
simply just 20mm of paulownia with a 10mm EVA pad glued on top, I beveled the EVA rubber which gives the illusion of more thickness , plenty of flex between the to material components !
