I think Adam Williams may have ridden one. A low key movie was touring, made by Ellis Ericson and Andrew Kidman, called On the Edge of a Dream. They spent a lot of time with George Greenough and developing edge boards. The movie seems to have been pulled from the net. From recollection on some waves the board looked a little awkward, this review said they made a lot of test boards, which probably explains that: https://www.swellnet.com/.../2018/10/30 ... edge-dream. I can't find an update and it doesn't feature on Kidman's website, though he has a coffee table book on Derek Hynd that looked interesting.

Thanks. Your R and D budget must be a lot bigger than mine. Are there any conditions that you reckon an edge board goes better in than a standard board? If you bought a second, you must have had liked something about it. Prone versus kneeling, do they ride the same? It might be the case, prone they don't make much difference. I see Pete Berry hada go with his variant of one in the 70s, a prone/kneel combo.

A guy in the US makes them: https://www.andreinisurfboards.com/edge and has a movie on the same page . There is footage of Dave Rastovich riding one at Cloudbreak.

This is my first edge board from Surf Empire , using the original file from Ellis & George. There is also a few other manufacturers who are incorporating the edge bottom into their own designs , some with the use of channels but mostly sticking to the double concave.

I have been riding this board a few times this past week and rode a couple prone this morning as the waves were small. This is the second edge board I have but the idea is nothing new apart from making the edge more prominent .....a board within a board.

A Baker edge bottom flex tail designed to cope with a lumpy, bumpy offshore reef wave. Glassed heavy and strong to cope with a beating. As Andrew Kidman says in The Edge Of A Dream about an edge board called Pink " the more onshore and rogue the conditions get the faster Pink goes". The book is definitely worth a read and the DVD is fascinating.

Damian Coase The difficulty evaluating the edge component is that all these boards have a lot more going on than just the edge. A chop machine is always handy.

agreed.

Has anyone ever built an edge board for prone riding?

Very cool. How long is it?
Mal Veigel
You would have to ask Reikki Kyra Jonsun who made it off a Greenough mould.
Phil Macey
so whats the advantage of an edge board?
Tom Wolverton
Speed. Cuts the chop better too.
Phil Macey
does it hold in the wave as well
Tom Wolverton
I think so. Depending on the fin, or fins.

i read a Dave Rastovitch interview years ago about his experience of riding an edge board and at that point in time he was speaking in superlatives... not sure where that POV is today? but GG was ripping on his edge boards so maybe take the plunge and find out, guessing they would be a lot of fun!

more lift & control on super sucky waves that would otherwise eat u..@ least with this board. Can be transferred- to a higher volume board for less powerful waves. Was George Greenough's original concept. This board built off one of his last moulds.Go to ' Edge of a Dream video' by Andrew Kidman, to see what he & Ellis did with same idea, on stand up boards. This board from that same space & time..& another life- for me.Please don't ask.Am happy too still be alive & able to ride this board...when & if- the opportunity arises.

About 5 feet..in the old measure. Is a spoon ridden prone- built for a very special wave, that does not break very often 2 kilometres, from my house.

Strange, I thought people liked the raft for taking the shock off your body. The primary value I see in this is, your board will not hurt you if any of three sides hit you when you wipe out. I went to the universal protection of my head with a helmet. Maybe in your experimentation you will discover other virtues, like never pearling on drop or safer hitting a rock if it does not pop.

it was about the Greanough edge board configuration with the Mat ability to change shape.

gotta say I rode my ply bellyboard for over 40 years and never got hit by it... maybe I was lucky but as they barely float my normal practice if I saw a crunch coming was to push is hard away from me.. usually under my body.. it would ultimately pop up thru the foam 3 or 4 metres away like a submarine surfacing and was quick to retrieve.. it was painted bright yellow.. that helped too

've thought about gluing a matt to the deck of my Bellyboard for more padding
