Paipo design in books

I made a rare stop in Ventura on Monday and hit the Barnes and Noble bookstore. To my surprise in the sports section there were two books that might be of interest to the forum. Both had paipo action. The first was very focused on the San Diego area IMO while the other was more international in scope. Both are by good writers too. Don't know if they have already been brought up here but they were new to me.

One appears to be a catalog going with a San Diego surfcraft exhibit. "Surfcraft: Design and the Culture of Board Riding" by Richard Kenvin

Yes, both are indeed interesting books. Rod had a bit to do with the 365 board book which does include quite a few prone boards. I know he wasn't in 100% agreement with one of the collectors views.

Richard Kenvin is open to acknowledging the role of paipo in surfboard development. He mixes in some interesting company, design wise.

The 365 board book appealed to me more than the other...I think that was the one with a couple of the mysto Agua boards from days of yore...Kenvin's book was fine, not knocking it, wish I could get down to SD for that exhibit, although the whole semi-mysto San Diego thing is getting old. "Hydrodynamica" apparently is destined to be on a U.S. double bill with 'Dolphin Glide" There was a time when it could have had a dramatic positive effect on surfing but if a few more years go by that time may pass without it.

Not sure if the Mingei Museum surfcraft exhibit is still open... it does appear that many of the surfcraft from the Mingei ("hydrodynamica") exhibit have migrated to the current Surfing Heritage & Culture Center exhibit, "What Box? Thinking Outside Traditional Lines of Surfboard Design, running February - April, 2015.

Both books are very good! The Winniman, James. 2013. Ultimate guide to vintage surfboards & collectibles, is also very good but pricey.

An interesting double feature. Finances appeared an issue at one stage. I wonder if the focus then changed a bit with the Tomo boards. I'd still be interested in his take. It took me a long time to appreciate Crystal Voyager. As a 17 year old I just wanted to guys surfing. My father was a boat builder so I wasn't interested in watching someone else make a boat. Now I really enjoy it. Dolphin glide might be the same. The other day sitting on the beach I saw a body surfer seeming to ride through the back of the wave. I've thought for a while that the back/roof of a wave is a realm yet to be fully explored. I was intrigued by the foils guys describing riding through foam.

Is there much prone content in the book? It's not one I've seen. I should send a photo I was sent of a 60s book and see if he offers any guidance to its value.

My recollection is there is a prone section... it is in my living room and I am not... for another 5 days Yes, it does. Guess is provoked enough interest to purchase the book on eBay. See:
